Jeff Stelling says Fabio Vieira’s signing ‘hasn’t worked out at all’ under Mikel Arteta at Arsenal.

The Sky presenter, who is set to leave Sky Sports after 30 years, pointed out that Arsenal probably need ‘one more defender’ and an ‘upgrade’ in their midfield during the summer transfer window.

Fabio Vieira was supposed to be that player to provide that added quality and challenge the likes of Granit Xhaka and Martin Odegaard this season.

But it hasn’t worked out for the 22-year-old following his £30 million transfer from Porto (Guardian).

He only has one goal and two assists to his name, but a lot of them have been limited from the bench, which doesn’t help with the player’s rhythm.

Either way, Jeff Stelling pointed out Vieira’s issues ahead of another summer of spending for the Gunners, as he told Sky Sports News (29/04/23 at 12:15 pm).

“I mean by common consent, they probably want one more defender, they probably need to upgrade their midfield because Vieira hasn’t worked out at all for them,” said Stelling.

VIEIRA NEEDS TIME

It’s unfortunate that he hasn’t been able to click, but it’s not helped by the fact that he hardly starts on a regular basis.

Every time he comes in, he is asked to make an instant impact, after coming in from the cold, so that isn’t easy to do.

Plus, when a £100 million signing such as Jack Grealish, who was already accustomed to the Premier League with Aston Villa, needs a year to settle in at Manchester City, then Vieira should also be afforded that time also.
