Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa will scout Rangers defender Calvin Bassey in action for the Ibrox club in the Scottish Cup final today, according to The Daily Record.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Rangers will take on Scottish Premiership rivals Heart of Midlothian at Hampden Park in Glasgow in the final of the Scottish Cup this afternoon.

Bassey, who can operate as a central defender or as a left-back, is likely to start for Rangers.

The Daily Record have reported that Premier League club Villa will have a scout present at Hampden Park to watch Bassey in action.

Villa manager Gerrard reportedly wants to strengthen the left side of his defence and is keen on securing the services of the 22-year-old Nigeria international he himself signed for Rangers in the summer of 2020.

Aston Villa move tempting for Rangers defender Calvin Bassey

In our opinion, a move to Aston Villa would be tempting for Rangers defender Calvin Bassey.

Villa are an established club in the Premier League, and the youngster has worked with Liverpool legend Gerrard before.

The Villans will be able to offer a bigger pay-package to the youngster than he is on at Rangers at the moment.

The chance to play in the biggest and richest domestic league in the world could be hard to resist for Bassey, described as “absolutely sensational” by former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur player Jason Cundy on talkSPORT for his performance against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League final in midweek.

Ex-Tottenham player Jamie O’Hara was so impressed by his performance in Sevilla that he said that the youngster was “like [Virgil] Van Dijk”.
