Aston Villa are now considering reviving their failed pursuit of Watford winger Ismaila Sarr in January. It was just four months ago that Steven Gerrard pulled the plug on his transfer.

That is according to Birmingham Live, which reports the Villans are now giving thought to a mid-season move for Sarr. New boss Unai Emery has told the club he wants to sign at least one forward this month. He also has funds available to refresh the squad Gerrard oversaw.

Sarr has kept admirers at Aston Villa this season despite their pursuit of the forward falling short in the summer. BBC Sport reported in August that Watford had agreed to sell the 24-year-old for £25m. But issues arose over the structure of a deal and Sarr’s personal terms.

Gerrard then decided to scrap signing Sarr, despite the forward making his desire to leave clear to Watford, per talkSPORT. Talks between the former Aston Villa boss and the 52-cap Senegal star signalled the end of the Liverpool legend’s interest in snapping up his services.

Sarr has since struck six goals and created a further four over 21 Championship games so far this season. He has also started 20 of the Hornet’s 26 fixtures to help the club sit fourth in the standings. While Sarr started all four of Senegal’s ties during the World Cup in Qatar.

Agbonlahor has urged Aston Villa to win the transfer race for Watford ace Sarr

Aston Villa are not alone in chasing Sarr’s services from Watford with a transfer in January, though. TuttoUdinese has credited Everton with making an enquiry after the forward told the Hornets he wishes to leave in January. But the Hornets set the Toffees a £35m asking price.

Watford paid Stade Rennais £40m to sign Sarr in August 2019 and handed him a five-year contract. The attacker has not extended those terms since, however, and could push for a move. Sarr sealing a transfer from Watford to Aston Villa would delight Gabby Agbonlahor.

“We’re crying out for a Sarr from Watford,” former Aston Villa captain Agbonlahor shared on Twitter after the Villans drew 1-1 away to Nottingham Forest in October. “Some pace!”
