Borussia Dortmund director of football Michael Zorc has said discussions are ongoing over renewing Dan-Axel Zagadou’s contract, who is wanted by Newcastle United and Manchester United.
Speaking to Sky Germany via Foot Mercato, the Bundesliga club chief revealed that talks are continuing over signing the 22-year-old centre-back to a new deal, with Zagadou’s contract set to expire this summer.
The French youth international has played just 11 games in all competitions this season, with Zagadou’s performances earning some criticism from the German media and supporters, yet despite this, Dortmund want to renew the defender’s contract, with Newcastle and United reportedly eyeing the centre-back.
According to Fussball Transfers, both Premier League clubs hold an interest in the former PSG youth academy product, with Ralf Rangnick said to be a big fan of Zagadou after five years in the Bundesliga with Dortmund.
However, whilst Zagadou is a free agent this summer, it appears that Dortmund are working hard to renew the defender’s contract, with Zorc talking up about the club’s progress with the 22-year-old unit.
The Dortmund chief said: “We would like to see him develop here with Dortmund as we hope to see him unlock his potential with us. There are talks ongoing over a new contract as we speak.”
Newcastle and United should let Zagadou sign Dortmund contract

Whilst Zorc believes Zagadou can reach his potential with Dortmund if he signs a new contract, it is hard to predict the French defender reaching the heights many expected from him earlier in his career.
Indeed, the defender was hailed as a future star for France, yet Zagadou’s development has stagnated in recent years, and for Newcastle and United, they should allow the centre-back to sign a new contract with Dortmund given the question marks over his potential.
