In the summer of 2019, Rangers were looking for two new centre back additions to bolster Steven Gerrard’s squad.
They wanted a youngster to develop in place of loanee Joe Worrall, as well as a player with international experience to replace veteran Gareth McAuley.
The Gers landed George Edmundson to replace Worrall, and then Filip Helander after releasing McAuley to give Gerrard strong options at the back.
It all could have been very different, as Rangers had targeted a deal for Mozambique international Mexer, who was leaving Rennes on a free transfer.
Gerrard was pictured meeting Mexer in France, and he was invited to Ibrox as he considered his options before Gerrard claimed he’d heard Mexer would be staying in France.
He picked a move to Bordeaux instead of Rangers, so as the Gers post incredible defensive stats this season, let’s see how Mexer is getting on this term.

Well, it hasn’t exactly gone well. The 32-year-old hasn’t played a single game this season, with Transfermarkt noting that he was either on the bench or simply not selected.
Bordeaux have been going with Laurent Koscielny and Paul Baysse as their first-choice centre back pairing, meaning Mexer is having to watch on for now.
The Rangers door has likely closed for Mexer now with Leon Balogun on board too, and some may wonder whether his decision has really paid off as Rangers go for trophies and historic defensive records.
