Arsenal fans surely wouldn’t have expected their side to be in the Premier League title race this season.

The project under Mikel Arteta has taken a huge step forward following the clever additions of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko, as the Gunners currently find themselves two points clear of Manchester City.

However, Arsenal’s Premier League title race has just become a bit more difficult after an announcement from UEFA.

What’s the story?

Well, following the Europa League Round of 16 draw in Switzerland, it was announced that Arsenal would be travelling to Portugal to take on Sporting Lisbon on Thursday 9th March.

The Portuguese giants were unfortunate not to progress out of Group D and into the Last 16 of the Champions League, so they represents one of the more troublesome opponents Arsenal could have drawn.

So, what is the significance of this in the Premier League title race?

Well, just four days after the trip to Lisbon, Arsenal take on Fulham at Craven Cottage.

The clash with the Cottagers would have been a difficult game even with a week’s rest for Arsenal, as Marco Silva’s side currently sit sixth in the Premier League and also find themselves in the FA Cup Quarter-Final.

It has been a tremendous campaign for Fulham, to say the least.

Therefore, it represents a tough task for Arsenal to pick up three points at Craven Cottage just four days after facing another quality side in Sporting Lisbon, over 1,000 miles away from the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal need to be relentless in Premier League title race

For any Arsenal fan suggesting that we are overreacting, recent events suggest otherwise.

Arsenal were eight points clear of Manchester City at one stage. However, a 1-1 draw against Brentford and a 1-0 defeat to Everton allowed Manchester City to overtake the Gunners following their 3-1 win in north London.

Of course, the Gunners have since reestablished a two-point lead again after the Citizens drew 1-1 to Nottingham Forest, but the fact that two poor results changed things completely shows Arsenal have no margin for error.
