Arsenal are interested in signing Sam Johnstone from West Bromwich Albion in the summer transfer window, according to The Daily Star.

What’s the story?

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal reportedly want to sign a goalkeeper and have identified Aaron Ramsdale of Sheffield United.

Ramsdale is ‘a top transfer target’ for the Gunners.

However, the Blades are not desperate to sell despite getting relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season.

This has led Arsenal to consider Johnstone.

West Brom are open to selling the 28-year-old goalkeeper for £20 million, and Arsenal are considering a move for the England international.

Would Sam Johnstone make Arsenal better?

Bernd Leno is a good goalkeeper, but the German needs competition.

Johnstone is at the top of his game at the age of 28 and is ready to take the next step in his career.

The England international is unlikely to be at relegated West Brom next season.

Described as “outstanding” by Tottenham Hotspur legend Gary Lineker on Twitter in March, Johnstone would make the Gunners stronger and could even replace Leno as the number one between the posts.

Arsenal are likely to face competition for Johnstone.

Wolverhampton Wanderers, Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United and West Ham United all have been linked with the goalkeeper.
