In almost every transfer window, there always seems to be a big-name club in need of a striker – Arsenal and Chelsea are stepping forward this time.

If the two London clubs could, and if it was financially viable, they would happily sign Ivan Toney from Brentford.

Jeff Stelling thinks the Arsenal transfer target is ‘for sale’ because that’s what Brentford have built their club around, as he told talkSPORT (08/01/24 at 6:30 am).

But the popular presenter says he ‘doesn’t think’ Ivan Toney’s next destination will be Chelsea.

It has been another season of struggle for Chelsea, who took it to another new low on Tuesday night when they were beaten 1-0 by Championship side Middlesbrough in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final.

Just like the story has been going all season long, Mauricio Pochettino’s side missed clear chance after clear chance, with Cole Palmer playing the false number nine role at the Riverside.

But whilst one side of London also has issues with a striker, so do Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, who have gone from sitting top of the Premier League table at Christmas to now sitting fourth in the table.

Yes, there is doubt about whether they could land Ivan Toney, but Jeff Stelling is certain that there is a chance to secure the signature of a player dubbed the ‘real deal’.

Ivan Toney to Arsenal or Chelsea?

“Everyone has a price,” said Stelling. “I am telling you. Ivan Toney is for sale. He is for sale right now. Brentford are a club who have based their entire being on buying players cheaply and then selling them when they are at the peak of their powers.

“And goodness me, a couple of teams need a striker right now. If the right offer comes along. I am thinking, he is on his bike.

“I don’t think it will be Chelsea.”

Chelsea are in bigger trouble than Arsenal

At least Arsenal’s forward line proved itself last season and has a number of proven stars in their XI.

The same can’t be said for Chelsea, who are now in their second year of playing abject football and heading towards no Europe again.

Some will argue that they shouldn’t be allowed to splash cash on another striker because those upstairs can’t be trusted with making the right call.

A spend of around £1bn and still margining to stand still is proof of that!
