Gabriel Martinelli has wished Arsenal target, Bruno Guimarães, ‘good luck’ on Instagram after he signed for Newcastle United.

On Sunday, Newcastle stuck their chest out by snapping up Guimarães from Lyon, who was also on Arsenal’s radar prior to his transfer to St James’ Park.

The 24-year-old, who is currently on international duty with Brazil, posted on Instagram that he is ‘ready for this new challenge’ and his fellow countryman, Martinelli, reacted by saying ‘good luck brother’.

Arsenal fans should be rightfully questioning why they didn’t sign Guimarães because he is a player that would have been very useful to them.

Mikel Arteta is fairly light in the midfield department and there are also question marks over some players that regularly play in that position.

Either way, with Mohamed Elneny still at the Africa Cup of Nations and Ainsley Maitland-Niles loaned out to Roma.

It has made Arsenal’s midfield even lighter and it’s obvious that depth is needed if the Gunners want to win the race for Champions League football.

But, on paper, what is the north London club’s loss is Newcastle’s gain because their relegation rivals will be very worried right now.

Eddie Howe’s side are sitting in the Premier League’s relegation zone, as Newcastle are slowly but surely putting a squad together that can provide them with the best chance of survival.

When Guimarães officially joins up with his new teammates at St James’ Park, their first game after the winter break will be a home tie against Everton.

It seems as though the Toffees are going to appoint Frank Lampard as their new manager and a win for Newcastle, then they can really drag the Merseyside club in the relegation dogfight.
