Rumoured Arsenal and Newcastle United target Seko Fofana reportedly wants to stay with RC Lens next season following the departure of Chieck Doucoure to Crystal Palace.
According to La Voix du Nord, the 27-year-old Ligue 1 star wants to stay in Northern France with his midfield partner set to move to the Premier League, with Fofana making the shock decision that has been labelled as a ‘one in a million’ to remain with Lens despite strong reported interest from Arsenal, Newcastle and PSG.
The Ivory Coast international has been one of the best midfielders in France since Lens’ return to Ligue 1 in 2020, and Fofana’s decision to now stay with the Pas-de-Calais side is a surprising one given how far some clubs are willing to go to sign the former Udinese star.
Recent reports have suggested that Lens could fetch as much as £34m for their star midfielder, but with Doucoure on the brink of signing for Palace, Fofana is making a noble decision to stay with the French club for at least one more season.
Hailed as a ‘magnificent’ player as per Le10Sport, Fofana has been one of the most complete midfielders in France for the past two seasons and a key reason behind Lens’ incredible success in Ligue 1, which makes the former Manchester City academy star’s decision to stay even that more incredible.
Indeed, Fofana is in the peak of his career and could well play for a UEFA Champions League side if he saw fit, with PSG the side who looked the most likely to sign the midfielder this summer, yet a stay at Lens is what appears to be on the table this summer, much to the dismay of Arsenal and Newcastle.
Fofana’s decision to stay at Lens is shocking in a good way

Loyalty in football has often been regarded these days as a false promise, with money so flooded into the game that the thought of a player being committed to a club now seems incredibly unlikely, yet Fofana is proving to be an exception to the rule.
The midfielder is way too good to play for Lens and is attracting interest from some major sides, however, Fofana’s decision to stay with the Northern French side is a shocking yet incredible move from the Ivorian, who will be looking to lead his club to more success next season.
