Arsenal and Newcastle want Edson Alvarez but Chelsea are now planning to make a new move for the Ajax man in January.
The Gunners were in the market for a midfielder before the transfer window slammed just on Thursday night.
Injuries to Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny had left Arsenal a little short in midfield, so Edu was considering dipping back in to the market.
A move for Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz failed to materialise and the deadline passed without a new midfielder arriving at the Emirates Stadium.
As for Newcastle, an injury to Bruno Guimaraes has highlighted some midfield issues and the Magpies may fancy an anchor man moving forward to allow Bruno and Joelinton to go forward.
Arsenal and Newcastle want Edson Alvarez
One name seemingly popped up on both Arsenal and Newcastle radars though, with Ajax’s Edson Alvarez wanted.
Newcastle were the first to be linked with Alvarez, with TUDN in his native Mexico reporting that the Magpies failed with a £25million offer.
Further reports claimed that Newcastle would increase their bid but that seemingly didn’t happen before the transfer deadline.
90Min reported in the build-up to deadline day that Arsenal had joined the race to sign Alvarez.
It looked like Premier League clubs were trying to move in and sign Alvarez before he heads off to the World Cup with Mexico later this year.
The situation then took another twist with Chelsea offering a huge £43million deal for Alvarez, but the Amsterdam giants blocked any late exit.
All three clubs will surely fancy Alvarez moving forward, especially if he shines at the World Cup – and Chelsea are already preparing a move.
The London Evening Standard claim that Chelsea are set to chase a big midfield signing in January and Alvarez is their preferred option.
Alvarez really wanted to join Chelsea on deadline day and that stance was seemingly enough to tempt Chelsea into trying again – even after signing Denis Zakaria.
If Arsenal or Newcastle want to sign Alvarez in January, they will seemingly need to push themselves ahead of Chelsea in this race.
