Arsenal missed out on Bruno Guimaraes because they were too slow to close a deal, allowing him to join Newcastle United instead.

Arsenal’s Champions League hopes look to be over after losing 2-0 to Newcastle on Monday night.

The Gunners simply had to win that game or at least claim a point, but the defeat leaves them with little hope of a top-four finish.

That will severely impact Arsenal’s summer transfer business but many are pointing the finger at Edu for not moving for players in January.

Whilst Arsenal let a number of players go in January, they didn’t manage to strengthen their own squad.

Arsenal’s squad depth has been left exposed and you have to wonder why they didn’t pull the trigger for Guimaraes.

Arsenal missed out on Bruno Guimaraes

The fact that Guimaraes scored the second goal in Newcastle’s 2-0 isn’t lost on Arsenal fans.

Guimaraes had been linked with Arsenal on a regular basis with Edu seemingly keen on his compatriot.

The Lyon star instead ended up joining Newcastle in a deal worth around £40million.

Guimaraes has quickly become a fan favourite and looks to be everything that Arsenal want in midfield.

Combative, composed on the ball and capable of chipping in with goals, the Brazilian has been a driving force for Newcastle.

It’s now claimed by the Daily Mail that Arsenal had a very genuine interest in signing Guimaraes during the January window.

Yet when it came to actually closing a deal, Arsenal were allegedly ‘indecisive and slow’, allowing Newcastle to swoop in and get the deal done.

Add that to the futile pursuit of Dusan Vlahovic and January is looking more and more disastrous for Arsenal.

When Arsenal head into the market this summer for a new midfielder, they will ultimately be looking for a player who can mirror Guimaraes’ Newcastle impact.

To not sign him in January seems bad enough, but now seeing him thrive in the Premier League and even score against Arsenal?

This is one transfer miss that could haunt Arsenal for years to come.
