Speaking on his YouTube channel, Arsenal journalist Charles Watts has shared what he’s learned from people who know Daniel Ek amid reports he’s going to try to buy the Gunners.
The Spotify chief sparked all sorts of speculation on Friday when he tweeted his desire to purchase the Gunners, and since then reports have run rampant.
Watts has been doing some digging, speaking to people in Sweden and people who know Ek personally, and they claim that this isn’t a PR stunt just to bury the news of the Spotify subscription price increasing.
“Is there a coincidence with Spotify increasing the prices of their membership? Who knows. It could be a good way of burying bad news, a lot of people have linked those two together.
“I’ve been speaking to people in Sweden over the last couple of days, and I’ve been speaking about trying to learn more about Daniel Ek and the type of character he is. I’m told he’s not someone who is in it for PR. I’m told he’s someone who tries to steer away from the spotlight, it’s not something he does that often. People who know him and know how he operates don’t see this as some big PR move because he’s always tried to steer away from that and the limelight.”

This is all great to hear, but it doesn’t quite add up to what we’ve seen so far.
If Ek truly did want to stay out of the limelight, he could have quietly made an offer to the Kroenke’s rather than first tweeting his desire and getting the likes of Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Dennis Bergkamp involved.
Of course, any move like this does need to have some level of PR involved, but it’s not quite accurate to say that he wants to stay out of the spotlight as he has been very public about his interest, and he’s even set to appear on Sky Sports on Wednesday afternoon.
This remains a situation to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.
