Premier League leaders Arsenal have joined the race to sign Bundesliga ace Djibril Sow after Nottingham Forest failed with a £17 million bid for the Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder, according to Sport BILD.

It there’s one thing we know about Frankfurt, it’s that they tend to know when it is the opportune moment to cash in.

“Only Eintracht won,” legendary former coach Dragoslav Stepanovic said recently when discussing the club’s decision to flog both Sebastien Haller and Luka Jovic during the summer of 2019 for a combined fee of around £100 million.

“The club sold these players at the right time when there was a lot of money (being offered for them). Two years later, many clubs would not have paid (those fees).”

With Switzerland international Sow entering the final 18 months of his contract, Frankfurt could be about to make a pretty penny on yet another player potentially exiting the Commerzbank Arena in the form of his life.

Arsenal hope to sign Djibril Sow of Eintracht Frankfurt after Nottingham Forest missed out

Arsenal, BILD say, have joined the race for Sow’s signature ahead of the January transfer window. Mikel Arteta wants to add some quality depth to a paper-thin engine room; Sow joining Palmeiras enforcer Danilo on the Gunners’ radar.

It would take a ‘lucrative’ offer to convince Frankfurt to cash in on one of Europe’s most underrated central midfielders. Nottingham Forest put forward a 50 million euro package for Sow over the summer. That offer included a transfer fee of around £17 million.

“Nottingham Forest has offered a 50 million euro package for Sow. About 20 million euros, five million in bonuses and then, of course, his wages,” BILD reporter Andreas Boni explained.

“(Forest would give him)ea four-year contract (worth) over six million a year. That’s how you get to 50 million euros. It also shows what a great development Sow has enjoyed at Frankfurt, where he was a Europa League winner.”

Sow, at 25, is four years Danilo’s signature. He is, however, a proven talent in a major European league. A highly-intelligent and extremely mature footballer, Sow would certainly provide the added depth Arteta wants as Arsenal look to end a near-twenty-year wait for a top-flight crown.

Arsenal are also looking for reinforcements further forward.

Shakhtar Donetsk schemer Mykhalyo Mudryk remains Arsenal’s number one January target.
