Arsenal looked at Gianluca Scamacca before pressing ahead with their move for Gabriel Jesus – and he has now been likened to Robert Lewandowski.
If there was one signing Arsenal really needed to make this summer, it was a new striker.
Eddie Nketiah signed a new deal but Alexandre Lacazette has moved back to Lyon, leaving Arsenal with a big hole in attack.
Arsenal have made Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus their top target and he underwent a medical earlier this week.
The Gunners appear to have their new striker signed, sealed and delivered but other names were of course considered.
Arsenal looked at Gianluca Scamacca
One of them was Sassuolo hitman Scamacca, who dazzled in Serie A last season with 16 goals in 36 outings.
The Italian striker is a real giant at 6ft 5in tall and many have seen his potential over in Italy.
90Min reported earlier this month that Scamacca had really impressed Arsenal scouts and Edu was very seen on signing him.
An approach was rumoured to be imminent with Sassuolo seeking around £35million – but that deal won’t be happening with Jesus Arsenal-bound.
It will now be fascinating to see whether Arsenal have missed out on a real star in Scamacca, or whether they have made the right choice in Jesus.

We would currently suggest it’s the latter with Jesus ideal for Arsenal, but Scamacca will be hoping for success in France.
The Athletic have now spoken to Scamacca’s former Italy Under-16 coach Bruno Tedino, and he offered a rather lofty comparison.
Tedino claims that whilst Scamacca loves Zlatan Ibrahimovic, a more suitable comparison is to Bayern Munich goal machine Robert Lewandowski.
“I know Ibrahimovic is his idol,” said Tedino. “But they’re totally different players. Gianluca has got a bit of the Robert Lewandowski about him,” he added.
If Scamacca can even become half the goalscorer Lewandowski has been with Bayern and Borussia Dortmund, he will have enjoyed a great career.
Jesus is the sensible choice for Arsenal but Edu may just be hoping that Scamacca doesn’t live up to the Lewanowski likeness.
