Calum Chambers made his first start for Aston Villa this weekend as Steven Gerrard’s side took on Newcastle United, and Arsenal fans were in shock at seeing their former player in new colours.

The 27-year-old defender was a shock January signing for the Premier League side as Chambers left north London after nearly eight years with the Gunners.

The former Southampton star has been largely a bit-part player with Arsenal since the arrival of Mikel Arteta, with Chambers this season playing just four matches for the Premier League giants.

And today, Chambers made his first start for Villa as the Birmingham-based club took on Newcastle at St. James Park in a huge fixture for both clubs in the top-flight.

Indeed, the departure of Chambers was made even more extraordinary when Arsenal didn’t sign a replacement, leaving the Gunners with just three senior centre-backs in the first-team squad.

Alas, the transfer was made, and Arsenal fans this afternoon were weirded out by seeing their former defender play in the colours of a new club, with Chambers impressing in his debut for Villa against Newcastle.

With Ezri Konsa out through suspension, Chambers was the obvious pick to replace the talented centre-back, and the Villa defender did well on his first start for the club against Newcastle.

Under Gerrard, Chambers could become a reliable member of the Villa first-team, yet Arsenal supporters were still baffled to see the defender represent a new team this afternoon at Newcastle.
