Arsenal could actually receive £5.9m from the signing of Jakub Kiwior as a clause involving Pablo Mari resurfaces.

What’s the story?

Well, Mikel Arteta and Edu completed the signing of the Poland international from Spezia in a deal worth £20m on Monday – he will wear the No.15 shirt at the Emirates Stadium.

In completing that deal, Arsenal have pinched one of Spezia’s best players, putting a significant dent in their chances of staying in Serie A.

As things stand, the Italian side are 15th in Italy’s top-flight, six points above the relegation zone.

Therefore, you could argue that Spezia are now more at risk of dropping into Serie B than Monza, another side who could possibly be relegated this season.

That would boost the chances of Arsenal receiving £5.9m from Monza, as the Italian outfit are obligated to sign Mari for that sum at the end of his season-long loan spell should they avoid relegation to Serie B (Goal).

Of course, it is a bit of a longwinded conversation, and a lot needs to happen before Arsenal receive that £5.9m sum, although it can definitely be argued that the signing of Kiwior boosts the obligation to buy clause being triggered.

Whatever happens, Kiwior represents superb business for Arsenal

Even if Monza suffer relegation and Arsenal do not receive £5.9m from the Italian side, the signing of Kiwior is fantastic business from Edu regardless.

The Gunners have got themselves an excellent backup option for Gabriel Magalhaes, and for a very reasonable fee at just £20m, while the Pole also has plenty of room for improvement aged just 22.

Left footed centre-backs of good quality are hard to find nowadays, as seen when Manchester United spent over the odds to sign Lisandro Martinez for £57m at the expense of Arsenal.

Therefore, this represents shrewd business from the Gunners, and if Spezia end up getting relegated instead of Monza, Arsenal will have only spent around £14m on Kiwior with Mari’s potential exit fetching roughly £6m.

Despite a few bizarre recruitment decisions since replacing Unai Emery, Arteta is really starting to get somewhere in the transfer market alongside Edu.
