Arsenal could reportedly offer Alexandre Lacazette a short-term contract this summer despite rumours that the striker could be replaced in the transfer window.

According to L’Equipe, the Gunners are considering offering the Frenchman a one-year contract extension with the option for an extra year should the 30-year-old continue to impress for the north London side.

Lacazette has been handed the captain’s armband this year since the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the January transfer window, with the attacker playing an influential role in Arsenal’s system and incredible run of form.

Whilst the striker has only bagged four goals in the Premier League this season, Lacazette’s hold-up play and connection with the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka has been invaluable, with the forward registering seven assists since becoming skipper.

Hailed as ‘terrific’ by Arteta earlier this season, Lacazette’s contract situation makes it difficult for Arsenal on whether or not they should tie the forward down to a new deal, with his current one set to expire this summer.

However, whilst Arsenal are looking to sign a new striker this summer, keeping Lacazette for an extra year or two could be an excellent decision by the club given his influence both on and off the pitch.

With four goals and seven assists this season in the league, Lacazette’s role as a link-up striker is one of the most niche in the Premier League. Yet for Arsenal, it’s a position that is working wonders on the team, and the club needed to tie the Frenchman down to a new deal because of it.

Indeed, Lacazette is one of the oldest members of the Arsenal squad and is continuing to prove his worth with every passing game. And for the Gunners, keeping him around for an extra year is hardly the worst idea and something the club can financially afford.
