‘Anywhere near’: Ian Wright says Tottenham player isn’t performing despite starting 4 games

Ian Wright says it just isn’t working for Richarlison at Tottenham Hotspur after scoring only one Premier League goal since his big-money transfer from Everton last summer.

The former striker says Richarlison ‘hasn’t got anywhere near going’ under Antonio Conte, who brought him to Tottenham, or his new boss, Ange Postecoglou.

But Wright is trying to remain positive for the 26-year-old by backing him to contribute to ten Premier League goals this term, as he told PL Productions (04/09/23 at 2:40 pm).

After starting and failing to score in Spurs’ opening three Premier League games, Richarlison started and scored as his side were knocked out of the EFL Cup to Fulham last week – it was even suggested that he didn’t want to start that game.

But for the trip to Burnley this past weekend, he was benched for the first time, as Postecoglou watched his players put five goals past Vincent Kompany’s men, with Son Heung-min netting a hat-trick – Alan Shearer was blown away by the South Korean star’s performance.

Whilst the likes of Son and James Maddison thrive, someone like Richarlison is being left behind, with Wright talking about his current situation.

“He has got something to offer,” said Wright. “In respect of the way he plays, he is kind of that player who can go on a tear. He can, all of a sudden, do great things, so he is another person who you can have in there.

“Imagine if he comes in and he can contribute ten goals. Son 15. Maddison with another 8-10 goals. Kulusevski will get a few goals.

“If he can get going, because he hasn’t got anywhere near going at Tottenham, then you can see they have a lot of potency up front, but it’s up to Ange to get him going.”

Brennan Johnson arrival

Tottenham were busy on transfer deadline day, including the arrival of Nottingham Forest star, Brennan Johnson – Ian Wright has been left impressed by his capture.

The Welshman’s arrival will, from Postecoglou’s perspective, hopefully provide Richarlison with a kick up the backside that his game time will reduce if his performances don’t improve.

Spurs now have numbers in the attacking third, so if it doesn’t work for the Brazil star in this new-look Spurs team, then he will probably be gone by next summer.
