Well, that was dull as dishwater, but that’s Gareth Southgate football for you!

Not many England players impressed during the defeat to Brazil, but Newcastle United’s flying machine, Anthony Gordon, can certainly lift his head high.

The 23-year-old was handed his England debut at Wembley and was probably his side’s best player.

In a lifeless performance from the England team ahead of Euro 2024, with little service for the forward line and a lack of attacking punch.

Antony Gordon was the only real spark, as he performed like he was in the black and white colours.

After the game, he lauded Jude Bellingham and how he enjoyed playing with the Real Madrid star the most, as he told talkSPORT (23/03/24 at 9:20 pm).

What’s interesting here is that the former Everton man noted how the duo had a ‘link-up’ in training.

So, there is a clear instant connection there between the two, which Newcastle fans will just love, it just couldn’t result in a goal out on the pitch.

On who he enjoyed playing with the most: “Everyone, to be honest with you,” said Gordon.

“But I loved playing with Jude (Bellingham). He always wants the ball, he is always looking to be positive and create things.

“I think we have had a link-up in training, which I have really enjoyed and tonight showed it. But unfortunately, we couldn’t get a goal from it. The more I play with him and the other different players, the more I get used to how they play.”

That’s the aim, but it’s not a guarantee.

The Newcastle fans will be screaming and insisting that he has to be handed that plane ticket to Germany.

But everyone knows that Southgate loves his favourites.

Will this become a straight shootout between Gordon and Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford? Or will he take both?

What about Jack Grealish? He just hasn’t performed or been on in it this season, but that hasn’t stopped the England manager from taking out-of-form players to major tournaments before.
