Angel Reese and Isabelle Harrison’s heated WNBA clash quickly sparked talk of a personal issue, but Alicia Jay pushed back on that reading.
The incident came during the Atlanta Dream’s game against the Toronto Tempo, where the matchup between Reese and Harrison had already become physical.
Harrison’s takedown was reviewed, ruled a Flagrant 2 foul, and led to her ejection. The clip looked dramatic, but Jay argued the reaction around it said as much about how women’s sports are discussed as it did about the foul itself.

Alicia Jay says Angel Reese and Isabelle Harrison moment was not automatic beef
On the We Need To Talk podcast, Alicia Jay cautioned against turning Reese and Harrison’s physical exchange into a personal storyline.
“People automatically said that they have some beef with each other or it’s personal, whatever the case may be.
“While we do not know if it’s true or not, I think in women’s sports, people always go to that when it comes to women being competitive with each other,” Jay said.
She added, “And that is not necessarily the case in men’s sports. I want to get away from that, if we can, because women are competitors.
Jay’s point was that Harrison’s foul can be criticized without turning the moment into proof of hatred between two players. Reese and Harrison were competing through a physical game, and that context matters before assuming there were deeper feelings behind the play.
Reese was visibly upset after the contact, while Harrison was removed once officials upgraded the foul. The reaction was understandable because the play was forceful and not treated as a normal basketball move.
Alicia Jay says Isabelle Harrison let competitiveness go too far against Angel Reese
Jay still made clear that Harrison’s action crossed a line, stating, “While Izzy let this get the best of her, and she should not have done what she did, let’s be clear, sometimes it comes out like that.
“Sometimes the competitiveness gets the best of you, and you don’t do the greatest of things,” Jay concluded.
The incident happened in the third quarter, with Reese working inside and Harrison defending through heavy contact. Harrison grabbed across Reese’s upper body and pulled her down, creating the WWE-style image that spread quickly online.
Officials assessed a Flagrant 2 because the contact was excessive and unnecessary. Atlanta went on to beat Toronto 102-77, with Reese finishing with 15 points and 17 rebounds.
Jay’s view was that Reese and Harrison can have a heated, ugly basketball moment without that becoming proof of lasting bad blood. The foul was serious, but the story does not need to be reduced to a feud.
