Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou hasn’t got his mind on the new Premier League season yet because he is a pundit at Euro 2024.

The opening five games are tricky for Spurs because they face a banana skin opening match against newly-promoted Leicester City, a trip to Newcastle United and Arsenal at home.

But those tests will be dealt with later down the line because Euro 2024 is taking centre stage in Germany, at the moment.

Newcastle’s main interest in this competition is because of England duo Kieran Trippier and the underused, Anthony Gordon.

But there are some transfer targets of theirs showcasing their worth and making history on Europe’s biggest stage.

On Wednesday, Georgia booked their ticket to the knockout stages when they beat Portugal 2-0 and set up a last-16 showdown with Spain.

Ange Postecoglou was watching the contest and Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili impressed him in between the sticks.

No Upcoming Fixtures

Sources told HITC that Newcastle have held talks about bringing the 23-year-old to St James’ Park as Eddie Howe looks to sign a new shot-stopper.

Portugal were already through to the knockout rounds, but that didn’t stop them from trying to push for goals, with 22 efforts on goal and five of those shots saved.

Postecglou labelled Mamardashvili as ‘outstanding’ and even shared that the Valencia man is someone who ‘everyone is tracking’, as he told ITV Sport.

“An outstanding goalkeeper, Mamardashvili,” said Postecoglou. “He is one that everyone is tracking. He has had a strong season at Valencia.

“When you have got a good goalkeeper. A strong goalkeeper and in-form, then he keeps you in those games and then you have the quality up the other end and they can cause problems.”

Newcastle United’s search for a new goalkeeper

Even though Nick Pope has been outstanding for the Magpies, he has just come off a long-term injury and it now seems the club is looking for that younger keeper.

Amid talks for the likes of Mamardashvili and Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale, they have also looked at Burnley’s relegated star, James Trafford.

Given that Newcastle can’t exactly spend freely as they would like, fans would probably urge the club to look to enhance other areas of the pitch.

Yes, Pope is coming off a long-term shoulder injury, but when he played a full campaign, he helped the team to Champions League football.
