Glasgow Rangers utility man Andy Halliday was one of the best performers as Steven Gerrard’s men drew at Ibrox on Wednesday.

It seems remarkable to say but Andy Halliday is clearly becoming one of the most important players within Steven Gerrard’s squad less than a year after it appeared that his Rangers career was over.
Neither Pedro Caixinha or Graeme Murty were particularly keen to use Halliday that often, and his loan to Azerbaijan last summer suggested that his days at Ibrox were numbered.
However, his versatility and seemingly-flawless attitude has clearly endeared Halliday to Gerrard. And he was rewarded with a rare start in the Gers’ clash with Kilmarnock on Wednesday as they looked to bounce back from the weekend’s cup semi-final disappointment.
And Halliday vindicated Gerrard’s faith. He may not possess the quality that some of the other midfielders have, but he still managed to put some of his teammates to shame with his display in the 1-1 draw. His manager was delighted with his performance.

It was a display that summed Halliday’s role up perfectly. He performed well in the middle of the park during the first-half, before looking just as capable as a left-back after the break.
And it was performance in the second-half that should tempt Gerrard to keep faith with the 27-year-old and hand him a start at St Mirren at the weekend.

Jon Flanagan endured a disappointing night for the Light Blues and was taken off at half-time. He has largely been an excellent signing, but seems to be in need of a break.
Halliday deserves a chance to step up and start in the full-back role that he appears to have few problems playing in. And, after a few disappointing results, it would be no surprise if Gerrard was urging his players to show the same level of desire that has not only seen Halliday save his Rangers career, but also turn himself into one of the most important members of the squad.
