Glasgow Rangers endured another disappointing evening as they were held to a draw at Ibrox.

Steven Gerrard has hinted to Rangers’ official website that Andy Halliday and James Tavernier are the two players within the Gers squad who can hold their heads up high following the club’s 1-1 draw on Wednesday night.

After the disappointment of the weekend, Rangers were looking to get back to winning ways and potentially close the gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

And it appeared that Gerrard was going to get the reaction that he wanted as Alfredo Morelos gave the home side the lead inside 10 minutes against Kilmarnock.

However, Killie would add to Rangers’ frustration as Greg Stewart swiftly equalised with a brilliant goal. And unfortunately for the Light Blues, that was to be the last goal of the contest and the points were shared.

The game saw Halliday handed a rare start in midfield as he lined up alongside Lassana Coulibaly and Scott Arfield. And Gerrard singled him out for praise, while Tavernier also got a mention from the boss.

“I actually thought Andy Halliday gave everything he got,” he told the club’s official website.

“I thought he delivered what I wanted him to do. Tav’s played every minute of every game. Tav’s gone to the well for us. He was excellent. I don’t think any of the other players can use tiredness as an excuse, but we just weren’t at it.”

If any player staked a claim to keep their place for the weekend, it was surely Halliday. The 27-year-old has endured a difficult few years with the Gers, but is now finding himself proving to be an important player under Gerrard – and he is taking that opportunity with both hands.
