There’s no getting around it. Manchester United’s goalkeeping issues are becoming too glaring to ignore, and change now feels overdue.
Altay Bayindir was handed the first two starts of the season but didn’t do much to cement his place. Both performances raised more questions than answers.
Andre Onana was given a chance in the cup against Grimsby, but he failed to make a case for himself. He conceded a near-post effort to put Grimsby ahead, getting a hand to it without enough strength behind it.

The second goal was equally troubling. Onana misjudged a corner, leaving former United trainee Tyler Warren an open net for an easy finish.
The match ended 2-2 after normal time before United fell short in the shootout, losing 12-11 after Bryan Mbeumo missed the final penalty.
Andre Onana’s penalty struggles
Harry Maguire’s late goal gave United a second chance to stay in the match, but Onana and the team couldn’t take advantage of it.
Onana, who had previously come up big in the 2024 FA Cup semi-final shootout against Coventry City, struggled this time around.

He managed to save just one of 12 penalties and did score one himself, but his overall performance was lacking.
He got a hand to five of the penalties, but four still went in, with his efforts not strong enough to make a difference.
Spotlight on penalty skills
Manchester United are in talks to bring Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp, according to BBC Sport.
Lammens, 23, is highly rated and prefers a move to Manchester United despite interest from Galatasaray.

Sofascore data highlights his strength in saving penalties, an area where Andre Onana struggled. Lammens saved four penalties last season.
If United had addressed the goalkeeper position earlier, Senne Lammens might have started against Grimsby. He won’t be signed in time for the Burnley match either.
