Arsenal are hunting for a new goalkeeper this summer, and they have received a boost to their pursuit of Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana.

The Gunners know that Bernd Leno’s future is unclear, and with Mat Ryan’s loan spell over and Runar Runarsson clearly not good enough for the Premier League, another goalkeeper is needed.

Ajax star Andre Onana has emerged as a top target, but Arsenal have been left waiting to find out the verdict of his appeal against a ban.

Onana ban reduced

Onana was banned in February by UEFA having tested positive for Furosemide, with the punishment set at one year.

The verdict of his appeal was heard today, and Court of Arbitration for Sport have reduced his ban from 12 months to nine months.

That means Onana will now be available to play in November, which should make him all the more appealing to Arsenal.

Arsenal’s move for Onana now looks more likely

NOS reported earlier this month that Arsenal had promised to make Onana their first-choice goalkeeper if he made the move, with Edu pulling out all the stops.

With Onana out of contract next summer, Ajax are seemingly resigned to losing the 25-year-old, who has been branded ‘one of the best’ goalkeepers in the world by ex-teammate Eyong Enoh.

NOS reported that Onana would cost £7.8million if he had his ban reduced, and just £1.75million if the original ban stayed in place.

That means Arsenal now face paying £6million more for Onana, but with Goal reporting that Arsenal will step up their interest, they’re seemingly ready to just get him in even if he can’t play until November.
