Amit Bhatia has explained that Championship safety is his main goal this season, after the Queens Park Rangers chairman spoke out for the first time since taken over from Tony Fernandes.

Speaking to QPR’s official page, Bhatia also explained his long and short term targets and how he hopes to make the west Londoners financially stable.

“There’s two targets – an on-field and an off-field target.

“The off-field target is to make the club financially stable. The new laws that the league has implemented regarding FFP and financial stability means that clubs have to change the way they behave. No longer can a rich owner just throw a lot of money at a club. I’ll have to run the club sustainably,” Bhatia told qpr.co.uk.

Such words will bode well with Rangers fans who have witnessed the club’s lavish spending in the Premier League ultimately cripple the club in one respect.

Bhatia appears to have the club’s best interest at heart and, although the next few season’s are potentially going to be about sustaining QPR, Championship survival is a given for this season.

“I like small goals – I’d like us to stay up this season and then build from there. We have a young, hungry squad. We have a squad made up of excellent characters,” he added.

“I remember asking Steve McClaren after the 7-1 drumming at West Brom, I asked ‘how is the dressing room?’ and he said ‘It’s easy for me to blame the dressing room but this is one of the best dressing rooms that I’ve ever had’.

“They’re together, they’re for each other and they’re good characters. The people we brought in in the loan window will bring a sprinkling of experience and so I hope that if we can build upon the momentum of the last few games that on-field we can give our fans a lot to cheer about this season.”

Boss McClaren takes his side north this Saturday as they face a Bolton Wanderers side who are perched just outside the play-offs after six games. The R’s will need to be at their very best to take anything from the encounter and, after their recent upturn in results, a point at least looks likely.

Bhatia will want to see a strong performance from the Hoops but, regardless of what happens this weekend, the QPR chairman has probably taken on the biggest challenge of his career and it will be his hard work over the coming years that creates the fairy-tale ending.
