Jadon Sancho has told Sky Germany that his England teammates at Liverpool and Chelsea tried to encourage transfers before he left Borussia Dortmund to join Manchester United.

The winger returned to his home country last year after the Red Devils paid BVB £73m for his services. He became the second-most expensive English player of all time by moving to Old Trafford. Only his United teammate Harry Maguire had cost more at the time at £80m.

Sancho took time to get accustomed to the Premier League after four-years in North Rhine-Westphalia with Borussia Dortmund. But the 21-year-old is growing more and more every week, as he moves onto five goals and two assists over 31 appearances in all competitions.

Scoring and creating goals was second nature for the London-born dynamo during his time in Germany. Sancho ended last season with 16 goals and 20 assists over 38 outings. It took his Borussia Dortmund career haul to 50 goals and 64 assists across 137 games altogether.

It was also only last season that Sancho failed to record double figures for goals and assists in the Bundesliga as a first-team regular. After breaking through at the end of 2017/18, he hit 12 and created 18 in 18/19. He then hit 17 of both, before netting eight and creating 12.

Sancho claims Liverpool stars ‘all tried’ to get him to snub Man Utd move

Liverpool had explored battling Manchester United for a transfer with Borussia Dortmund for Sancho last summer. Although The Athletic reported Jurgen Klopp would only raid the Westfalenstadion for the 23-cap ace if one of his main three forwards exited Anfield first.

But that did not stop the Reds’ crop of England internationals from trying to get Sancho on board, it seems. He has now shared that his Three Lions teammates at Anfield and Chelsea tried to encourage him to snub the Red Devils and move to Merseyside or London instead.

“I’d met Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw with the national team. They always said: ‘Come to United’,” Sancho said.

“There were also the guys from Chelsea and Liverpool, who all tried to convince me of their club. But it only really got serious after the European Championship.”
