Gary Neville has questioned the transfers Arsenal have made this window as the Gunners broke their summer spending record on six signings.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, the former Manchester United pointed out that he was unsure what direction Arsenal were heading in based off the transfers they had made this summer.

The Gunners spent £143m on new signings this window, a record for the club as reported by the Evening Standard. Ben White cost Arsenal £50m from Brighton and Hove Albion, whilst Martin Odegaard and Aaron Ramsdale were each £30m transfers.

Arsenal made a deadline day signing in Takehiro Tomiyasu following the departure of Hector Bellerin on loan. Each new arrival at the Emirates this window being is under the age of 23. However, Neville is worried about how Mikel Arteta has spent this summer.

The Sky Sports pundit said: “I’m not quite sure what the strategy is of Arsenal in the transfer market. It seems a little bit all over the place. Maybe there is a strategy, but it’s not been explained very well and it’s not very clear.”

Indeed, the return of the Premier League in two weeks will shed some light on how the new transfers have gelled since arriving in Arsenal.

With the Gunners rock bottom of the Premier League table, the north London side need to start picking up wins.

And with Arteta spending the most out of any window in both the Premier League this summer and in the history of any manager of Arsenal, the Basque coach is putting his future on the line with these transfers.
