Speaking on The Done Deal Show, journalist Dean Jones has shared what he’s been hearing about Liverpool and their transfer plans, including an insight into their budget this summer.
The Reds have been linked with numerous big-money moves this summer for the likes of Youri Tielemans, Saul Niguez and even Kylian Mbappe, but Jones believes all of those rumours are wide of the mark.
Indeed, the journalist says that Liverpool don’t have the type of money needed to do these kinds of deals, claming that they can’t go and spend in excess of £50m on a single player.
What’s been said?
Jones gave an update on Liverpool.
“At the moment it’s very unclear whether Liverpool have much money to spend, and I don’t think they do have the type of money needed to sign Barella to be honest. I think they need to look at who else they can get out the door. Losing Wijnaldum, I always said was such a gamble, I understand not wanting to give him a contract, but signing a replacement is going to cost above and beyond that,” Jones said.
I don’t think Barella will join Liverpool, I don’t think he has any intention of doing that. I also don’t think Saul Niguez is one that’s going to happen, Tielemans isn’t one that’s going to happen. All I really hear when I try to get a path on what they want to do is what they can’t do. They can’t go and spend in excess of £50m on one player.”

Time to be frugal
It sounds as though Liverpool won’t be able to make any blockbuster signings this summer, but that doesn’t mean they can’t make any good signings.
The likes of Yves Bissouma and Renato Sanches, who Liverpool have been linked with, should be available below that £50m mark, while someone like Donyell Malen shouldn’t command such a fee either.
The Reds could still have an exciting summer, but it seems as though it won’t be an incredibly expensive one.
