Alfie Lewis has told West Ham’s official website that he was delighted to make his Hammers first-team debut in the win over Dagenham and Redbridge on Wednesday night, but admitted that it is probably too soon to expect more game-time for the senior side.

The 18-year-old has predominantly featured for the Irons’ under-18 side this term but has also been given the chance to play for the under-23 team on a couple of occasions.

Despite his lack of experience, David Moyes showed a lot of faith in the youngster by throwing into the starting lineup for the mid-season friendly. But, while he put in an extremely bright performance on the night, he hinted afterwards that his immediate goal does not involve more minutes for the first-team.

“I got told yesterday I would be playing, and yeah I was really excited. I’ve been thinking about it. I was given a chance and hopefully I took it,” he told the club’s official website.

“I think we moved the ball quite well on the pitch. We stopped them, especially during their aerial duels in the box. We stopped them and we took our chances as well. It was a good performance.”

“I just want to play for the U23s really and train with the first team a few times. I’m not sure about a competitive first team appearance yet. I’m not the one to answer that but we will see.”

Lewis looked extremely bright in the contest – the fans were certainly impressed – hinting that he could be another really exciting prospect to come through the ranks at the London Stadium right now.

West Ham have so many talented starlets pushing themselves onto the periphery of Moyes’ thinking and that has got to be an incredibly encouraging sign for the coming years – provided that the club manage to get the best out of them.

The club confirmed last summer that Lewis had signed a contract that is set to keep with the Irons until 2020, so it certainly appears that they have high hopes for the youngster.
