Alexis Sanchez has sent a message to Mesut Ozil after the Arsenal icon announced his retirement from football earlier on Wednesday.
What’s the story?
Well, the German has decided to hang up his boots following an illustrious career in football, which involved 254 appearances for Arsenal – more than he made for any other side.
In total, Ozil scored 44 goals and provided 79 assists for the north Londoners.
123 of those outings were made alongside Sanchez, and the Chilean – who is now at Marseille – paid tribute to Ozil on Instagram after hearing about his retirement.
The South American wrote: “We really understood each other my friend Mesut. Wishing you the best in your next chapter.”
Ozil and Sanchez certainly enjoyed a telepathic relationship at the Emirates Stadium.
The pair combined to create 18 goals for Arsenal, with their efforts helping the Gunners win the FA Cup in 2014/15 as well as in the 2016/17 campaign.
Ozil also won the FA Cup once before Sanchez completed his £35m move from Barcelona in 2014, playing a key role as Arsenal lifted England’s greatest domestic cup in 2013/14 with a 3-2 win over Hull City.
Ozil won the FA Cup for a second time without Sanchez in 2019/20 after the Chilean had departed to join Manchester United, meaning the German won the FA Cup on four occasions for Arsenal.
Mesut Ozil is an Arsenal icon
While things ended on a sour note for Ozil at the Emirates Stadium – his contract was terminated by Mikel Arteta in January 2021 – he will go down as an Arsenal icon.
The Gelsenkirchen-born wizard’s £42.4m arrival from Real Madrid in 2013 was one of the most exciting things Arsenal fans had witnessed for many years, as a bonafide superstar was signed by Arsene Wenger.

Ozil certainly lived up to the hype, with his technical ability and vision dazzling the Emirates Stadium for many years.
Hopefully, the German enjoys his retirement – he deserves to after entertaining football fans with his immense talent throughout the years.
