Alberto Moreno has praised Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson in The Guardian.

Moreno has said that he lost his place in the Liverpool team because of the way Robertson started to play.

The 28-year-old Spain international left-back was on the books of Liverpool from 2014 until 2019.

Moreno was released by the Reds in the summer of 2019, and he subsequently joined Villarreal on a free transfer.

Robertson moved to Liverpool from Hull City in the summer of 2017.

Moreno told The Guardian: “After the final against Sevilla, James Milner played left-back. If the coach puts a right-footed central midfielder there, then he doesn’t want me.

“But the following year pre-season started and he played me. I got back in the Spain squad after three years and just then, I injured my ankle.

“That was when Andy Robertson had his chance. He played at such a high level (gesturing to the ceiling) and that was it; I didn’t get any more chances.”

It is great to see Moreno acknowledge Robertson’s quality and class.

It must have been hard for the 28-year-old left-back – who has had injury problems during his spell at Villarreal so far – to see someone else take his place in the team.

Moreno did not always have the best of times at Liverpool, although he did win the Champions League with Jurgen Klopp’s side in 2019.

In the end, it was best for both Moreno and Liverpool that they parted ways.

Robertson has proved to be a shrewd signing, especially for the price that Liverpool got him.

The Scotland international is now one of the best left-backs in Europe.

Robertson was a key figure for Liverpool in their Premier League title success in 2019-20.

The left-back played his part in the Reds finishing third in the league table this campaign.
