Alasdair Gold has told his YouTube channel that reports of a fee being agreed between Tottenham and Middlesbrough for Djed Spence are wide of the mark – but that talks over a deal should intensify on Monday and Tuesday.

Reports emerged over the weekend that Spurs had agreed a £20million fee to sign the London-born 21-year-old. It comes after a wonderful loan at Nottingham Forest, helping Steve Cooper’s side achieve promotion.

Pundits had even begun to talk about a move for Spence to Spurs – Micah Richards claiming it is a good signing for Antonio Conte’s men. But it appears a move is not as far down the line as some have led to believe.

That is according to the ever-reliable Gold. The Football London reporter told his YouTube channel that while Spurs are keen and are set to progress in talks today and tomorrow, a fee is not yet agreed and it is not close to being done.

“Reports of a fee being agreed are wide of the mark. Talks are not at an advanced stage, yet. What I have been told is that things are expected to develop early this week. Monday, Tuesday, things will start to kick on,” Gold said.

Gold: Tottenham talks for Spence to intensify

Forgetting what stage a deal is at, or how much will he cost – is he a good signing? Tottenham currently have Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal as options at right wing-back. Spurs need an improvement there.

Doherty has been poor for the large quantity of his Tottenham spell but significantly improved under Conte. Royal is yet to prove his £25million fee, but it was his first season in English football and improved towards the end.

Spence is not probably at Doherty or Royal’s level just yet, but under Conte and with regular football, he has the potential to far exceed either of Tottenham’s current options.
