Alan Shearer didn’t hold back in what he thought about Antony during Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup on Wednesday night.

It was a game where both sides lacked that cutting edge in the final third, with many chances being missed and players struggling to truly test the opposition’s keepers.

In the end, it was a set-piece goal from Casemiro that provided some life from Erik ten Hag and resulted in Manchester United booking a next-round ticket against Liverpool.

But whilst the Manchester United players would have been overjoyed with that late winner, Antony got well and truly roasted for his performance.

The 24-year-old was substituted after 73 minutes and Alan Shearer made it clear that he didn’t deserve to stay on the pitch, as he told BBC Sport.

The legendary striker added that it was the ‘same old same old’ from Antony and how he simply isn’t good enough.

The Brazil star did nearly score in the first half when his first-time effort from the edge of the box thundered onto the post.

You thought Manchester United and Antony were going to be in for a lively evening, and whilst they won, it proved to be another frustrating game for their big-money signing.

Antony’s latest performance for Manchester United

“Well, he might be disappointed he is coming off,” said Shearer.

“But he hasn’t done anywhere near enough to warrant him to stay on the pitch tonight. Same old. Same old.

“Get the ball, come inside, pass it to someone else or have a shot. It’s not enough when you cost that much money.”

Antony’s price tag is weighing him down

The issue is the £86 million Man United paid Ajax for the Brazil star. It simply shouldn’t have happened and now it’s weighing him down.

If this was a £25 million player, in today’s market, you feel he would have got less stick, but given the platform he is on, then he is getting questioned by every touch.

Many don’t even know if ten Hag will be in the dugout at the end of the season or if Man United will win a trophy and secure Champions League football.

All of that uncertainty doesn’t help a player like Antony because the powers that be might just decide to clear up everything beneath them because it hasn’t been working for far too long.
