Ian Wright has lauded Timo Werner for the early impact he has already had for Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur.

On Sunday, the 27-year-old made his Spurs debut against Manchester United and he assisted Rodrigo Bentancur’s equaliser in the 2-2 draw.

Ian Wright was reacting to fans mocking Manchester United winger Antony and how Timo Werner has already done more than him, as he told Premier League Productions (15/01/24 at 2:40 pm).

From Antony’s 17 Premier League games this season, he is yet to score or assist – with Spurs’ loan signing only taking 46 minutes to get involved in the goals upon his return to the Premier League.

Whilst rival fans like to rub salt into the wound regarding that stat, ex-Arsenal striker Ian Wright made it clear and stated as bluntly as possible that ‘it’s a fact’.

Not only that, he is backing Timo Werner, who had his own difficult period when he was at Chelsea, to come good under Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham.

Timo Werner and Antony’s stats

On social media mocking Antony about how Werner already has more assists: “Well, they are going to say that and he has,” said Wright. “It’s a fact.

“Again, we go back to it. Timo Werner, who hasn’t played there for how many years now, came into the Tottenham team and looked like he has been playing there for the last six or seven games because he knows the structure. He can do that.

“I hope he does well, I really do.”

A bright start by Timo Werner

That was a pretty solid opening from Werner, who did even better when you consider that he has hardly played this season.

He needs to build his fitness up and he will get that because key players are either injured or on international duty.

And by the time they return, you would suspect that Werner will be at full throttle, which works well for Spurs because it lifts the competition within the squad.

In truth, when all of Tottenam’s forward players are fit. Werner isn’t starting, even on a good day, which now showcases the depth the team has.
