Newcastle United will have mixed emotions following their 1-1 draw at Bournemouth on Sunday.
Alan Shearer feels Eddie Howe’s side were fortunate to earn a point and Bournemouth’s disallowed winner in injury time ‘shouldn’t have been disallowed’.
The issue with Newcastle is that they weren’t just ‘very lucky’ in that moment, according to their legendary striker.
But he ‘expects more’ from the team because he thinks something is missing and how Howe’s teams usually have a sense of ‘energy’ about them.
Newcastle beat Southampton on the opening day of the Premier League season, but they were down to ten men for large parts and the newly-promoted side dominated possession.
At Bournemouth, there were no such excuses, with the defensive backline unable to cope with the pressure the opposition were putting on them.
All in all, Shearer wants something drastic to happen in the next week and he called for the club to make a ‘big signing’ before Friday’s transfer deadline.
In terms of incomings this summer, the familiar and well-known face they have bought in is Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer and he started against his old club on Sunday.
Paul Mitchell is now running the show for Newcastle and Shearer thinks he and Darren Eales, the club’s CEO, need to avoid ‘embarrassing’ themselves.
And for that to happen, the Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer wants Newcastle to sign Crystal Palace defender, Marc Guehi, as he told The Rest is Football.
Newcastle have had a record bid turned down for Guehi and are hoping to close a deal, but nothing is happening yet, with Shearer making his feeling pretty clear.

“I expect a lot more,” said Shearer. “Eddie’s always about the energy and the pressing. I didn’t see any of that. They got really, really lucky. I thought it was awful to chalk off Bournemouth’s goal. It shouldn’t have been disallowed at all.
“They need to give the fans a bit of excitement. Darren Eales and Paul Mitchell, the sporting director and chief executive, they need to do something in the next week because they can’t go into September without bringing a big signing to Newcastle.
“They need to bring Marc Guehi in. They need to have a statement signing. It will be really embarrassing for those two, in particular, who are now running the football club, for them to go into September without bringing in a big hitter or a big statement signing in. I think it would look really, really poor on those two. They have got them (the financials). They sold Elliot Anderson and Minteh to Forest and Brighton to bring the money in. They have made several bids for Guehi at Crystal Palace. They just need to get it over the line.”
Eddie Howe’s future
England could approach Howe to be manager and it will be interesting to see how he reacts if that happens.
You suspect that if he doesn’t get what he wants in the transfer market, then it will be easier for him to wave goodbye.

That’s why this next week is going to be huge for the football club and their quest to return to Europe after playing Champions League football last season.
After reaching such a high, you can’t help but be so ambitious again and Howe will certainly be drilling that message to the powers that be.
Newcastle signing the ‘magnificent’ Guehi would be a statement and turn the mood around at the club because there seems to be some uncertainty.
