Alan Shearer ridicules Derby County’s decision to re-hire ex-Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren

McClaren has begun his second stint in charge of Derby, seven months after leaving Newcastle.

Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has made his thoughts on Steve McClaren’s return to Derby County abundantly clear.

McClaren was re-hired as Derby manager on Thursday afternoon, 17 months after he was sacked by the Championship club.

His dismissal followed a wretched run of form which saw the Rams drop to eighth place in May, having occupied a top-two place at the start of February, and coincided with alleged interest from Newcastle United.

McClaren was subsequently appointed Newcastle’s head coach – a role from which he was also sacked nine months later, with the Magpies struggling at the foot of the Premier League.

Derby though, are willing to let bygones be bygones, and have taken back the 55-year-old after parting ways with former St. James’ Park assistant Nigel Pearson on Saturday.

The decision has left many in a state of bafflement – not least Derby striker Darren Bent – and Shearer can certainly be included in that bracket.
