Arsenal received one boost in their pursuit of Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana last week – and have now been given another.
The Gunners may sell Bernd Leno this summer, meaning Edu and Mikel Arteta would need to bring in a replacement first-choice stopper.
Onana is emerging as a top target, though other stoppers have been linked with the transfer window starting to gather pace.
Arsenal’s pursuit of Onana
NOS in the Netherlands reported earlier this month that Onana is ‘almost certain’ to leave Ajax and Arsenal have promised him a first-choice role.
Onana received a year-long ban in February for a doping violation, and the report suggested that Arsenal could get him for just £1.75million if that ban stood.
The Cameroonian ace would cost almost £8million if the ban was cut, and that’s what happened; Onana can now play again in November.
That’s a boost for Arsenal, and with Onana out of contract in 2022, it looks like a cut-price move could be on the cards this summer, with Fabrizio Romano suggesting Arsenal have been in talks for Onana for months.

Ajax sign another goalkeeper
Ajax goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg started for the Netherlands on Sunday, whilst Vitesse Arnhem stopper Remco Pasveer is arriving this summer.
Now, Ajax have signed yet another goalkeeper with Go Ahead Eagles ace Jay Gorter returning to the club; he spent four years with Ajax as a kid before leaving in 2014.
With three goalkeepers now battling it out, Ajax seem to be paving the way for Onana to go, especially with Kjell Scherpen and Dominik Kotarski also in the mix.
Of the six goalkeepers at Ajax for next season, Onana will be the favourite to go – and it’s all going the right way for Arsenal, with this latest development another hint that Onana is going.
