Tottenham Hotspur were told to pay £250,000 per week as salary for Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele, according to ESPN.

ESPN have reported that Barcelona winger Dembele was offered to Tottenham and Chelsea in the January transfer window.

The winger’s representatives told Tottenham and Chelsea that the salary needed was £250,000 per week.

And that, according to the report, holds true for any club looking to sign the 24-year-old France international in the summer of 2022.

ESPN have reported that Tottenham decided that a deal for Dembele was not feasible, as star striker Harry Kane is the club’s highest earner at £200,000 per week.

Were Tottenham right to turn down Ousmane Dembele?

In our view, Tottenham were right to turn down the chance to sign Dembele for £250,000-a-week salary.

That is too much money to pay to a 24-year-old who has had injury problems and has not really fulfilled the potential he showed at Borussia Dortmund.

Now, of course, Spurs will have to pay top players big money to come to club, if they aim to win the Premier League title and become regulars in the Champions League.

But, we do not think that Dembele would have made Tottenham that much stronger, especially for £250,000-a-week, even though GiveMeSport quoted Lionel Messi as saying about Dembele in March 2020: “His pace is frightening in training.”
