Scottish Premiership champions Celtic are back in for Benjamin Siegrist with the Daily Mail claiming that the former Dundee United goalkeeper could replace the Eredivisie-bound Vasilis Barkas.

Hoops supporters with long memories may recall, back in December 2020, that Siegrist’s agent went out of his way to ensure that Celtic’s interest in the one-time Aston Villa youngster became public knowledge.

“Benjamin has had an extraordinary season. There is interest in him from clubs in the Bundesliga and the Dutch Eredivisie,” explained Dr Thomas Kraft.

“Celtic have also scouted him several times, that is true. If there was a chance to move to Celtic then that would be a very good step for Benjamin.”

Dundee United, at the time, wanted around £1 million for one of the Scottish Premiership’s most reliable shot-stoppers. With his contract expiring in just three weeks’ time, that very same player will leave Tannadice for absolutely nothing, some 18 months after Celtic expressed their interest for the first time.

Will Celtic finally sign Benjamin Siegrist from Dundee United?

According to The Mail, Siegrist’s availability has not gone unnoticed on the green side of Glasgow. The departure of Vasilis ‘butterfingers’ Barkas’ to Utrecht means Ange Postecoglou’s Premiership champions are in the market for an experienced glovesman and Siegrist, a 30-year-old with four seasons of football north of the border under his belt, ticks a lot of boxes.

“If I’m Celtic, I go out and buy him at the end of the season as back up,” Hoops legend Chris Sutton tells Premier Sports. “I really like him. He’s had a number of seasons at Dundee United now. I think he is a brilliant goalkeeper.”

Interestingly, Siegrist has been linked with Celtic’s Old Firm rivals Rangers since the turn of the year. The Gers appear to be looking elsewhere for the time being, however, with Jack Butland, Vladan Kovacevic and Martin Fraisl linked more recently.

Rangers are also in talks to hand the evergreen Allan McGregor a new deal at Ibrox.
