Davinson Sanchez is still stuck at Tottenham Hotspur after the Premier League misfit ‘refused’ a £13 million move to Spartak Moscow.

With Ange Postecoglou opting to leave no one in any doubt about his desire to bring at least one new centre-half to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before the September 1st deadline, news of Davinson Sanchez’s aborted switch to Russia is a further complication the former Celtic boss could have done without.

Tottenham are running into problems in their pursuit of Micky Van de Ven, Edmond Tapsoba and Tosin Adarabioyo.

What’s more, Postecoglou can no longer count on a £13 million windfall coming his way via the sale of Davinson Sanchez, the Colombian’s camp confirming that talks over a move to Spartak Moscow have now been cancelled.

“Yes, it’s true. Sanchez finally refused the possibility of moving to Spartak,” a representative speaking on behalf of the former Ajax youngster tells Sport Express.

Sanchez’s agent, Fernando Villarreal, disputes the claims that there were ‘political’ motives behind the decision, with The Guardian reporting that Premier League clubs had been discouraged from accepting Russian money during the ongoing Ukraine crisis.

“Is Sanchez’s refusal related to the political situation? The main reason was social life and, in general, the life and future of his wife and son,” Villarreal adds

Spartak Moscow’s CEO, Oleg Malyshev, admitted earlier this week that he was ‘interested’ in Sanchez.

“I would not like to comment until a final decision is made,” Malyshev told RB Sport. “We are considering options for strengthening the defence. We are interested in this player. But I won’t tell the details.”

A player who became Tottenham’s record signing when he joined for a staggering £42 million back in 2017 is still likely to be on his way out the door this summer, however, with his contract expiring in less than 12 months’ time.

Galatasaray is another potential destination.

Spartak, meanwhile, could now turn to Celtic’s Carl Starfelt. The Swede has experience at playing in Russia. Starfelt made his name at Rubin Kazan before his 2021 move to Parkhead.
