According to David Ornstein, Arsenal are now unlikely to sign Pedro Neto this summer.
The Portuguese winger had worked his way to the top of Arsenal’s wishlist, but with Wolves unwilling to sell, it seems as though Arsenal may be back to square one in their search for a new winger.
The Gunners will have to go back to the drawing board as they chase a new wide attacker, but, in our view, they should make a cheeky enquiry for one of their former targets – Moussa Diaby.
The north London club were strongly linked with Diaby earlier this summer, but the Frenchman was deemed as ‘ungettable’ due to the fact this Bayern Leverkusen squad wanted to stay together this season to challenge for top honours.
Dean Jones perfectly summed Diaby’s situation up on The Done Deal Show a few weeks ago.
“Moussa Diaby was a name that cropped up, but Bayer Leverkusen just don’t want to lose him. Newcastle have been knocking on this door for two months now and it wasn’t a case of money at this point, Leverkusen are so desperate to keep this group together for this season and pretty much the entire team is up for it and they’re going to give it a crack together. I think Diaby is almost ungettable,” Jones said.
Diaby was deemed as unattainable earlier this summer due to Leverkusen’s ambitions of challenging, but things may have changed since then.
Indeed, while we’re only four games into the new season, it’s fair to say that Leverkusen are already in disarray.
They’ve lost three of their four opening games, and while they earned their first points of the season on Saturday, two red cards to key players marred the performance and leaves them vulnerable for their upcoming games.
To put it bluntly, Leverkusen may now not be in a position to challenge for the top honours over in Germany against the behemoth that is Bayern Munich, and this change in circumstance may see Diaby’s future plans altered.
Arsenal need a winger, and while Diaby wanted to stay at Leverkusen for another season to see what this squad could do together, their poor start could leave the door ajar for Arsenal to make a move.
It may be cheeky to ask for a player who is deemed ‘ungettable’, but amid Leverkusen’s struggles, the Gunners should at least put the question to the Frenchman.
