Speaking on Stadium Astro, Matt Upson has been speaking about Aaron Ramsdale and the impact he’s had since joining Arsenal in the summer.

Ramsdale has been excellent since joining the Gunners, he’s been nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month – and that’s no easy feat as a goalkeeper.

Upson has had nothing but good things to say about Ramsdale, stating that he’s surprised at how good he’s been, but even he believes that it’s too soon to be discussing him as England’s number one.

What’s been said?

Upson was discussing the prospect of Ramsdale taking Jordan Pickford’s spot as England’s number one.

“We’re talking about a goalkeeper who has only had this number one spot at his club for 10 or 12 games, it’s not long, to think about dislodging the national team goalkeeper. There’s work to do for Ramsdale on that front, but he’s actually surprised me with how good he is and how good he is with his feet, and there’s real potential for him,” Upson said.

Exceeded expectations

It’s fair to say that Ramsdale has exceeded almost everybody’s expectations since joining Arsenal.

He came in as a goalkeeper who had been relegated twice in a row with Bournemouth and Sheffield United, but since displacing Bernd Leno as the Gunners’ number one, he’s looked every bit a top-class Premier League goalie.

Is it time for him to take Pickford’s England spot? Well, it’s up for debate, but the Everton goalie has very rarely let his country down, so taking the number one shirt from him would be rather harsh at this point.
