Divock Origi leaving Liverpool this summer appears to have been confirmed by teammate and captain Jordan Henderson.
The Belgian hitman is gearing up for what looks like will be his last-ever game at Anfield on Sunday as the Reds welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers to Merseyside in the final Premier League match of the campaign.
There has been speculation about Origi leaving Liverpool for months and the former Lille hitman is reported to have told Fenway Sports Group that he won’t be signing a new contract this summer.
Earlier this week, it was claimed in Italy that the 27-year-old was set to have a medical with AC Milan ahead of a stunning transfer to San Siro.
Origi has never been anywhere close to being one of the first names on Jurgen Klopp’s team sheet but, by the same token, he has produced some memorable and magic moments for Liverpool, including two goals in that Champions League semi-final victory over Barcelona in 2019 – and another one in the final win over Tottenham Hotspur.
And Henderson, the £20 million skipper, has effectively confirmed that the player will definitely be leaving, telling the club’s official programme notes.
He said: “It looks like today will be Divock’s last at Anfield for Liverpool so I hope he gets the kind of send-off he deserves. Actually I know that he will because he has been such a special player for us, but he is also an incredible person who has taken this city and its people to his heart.
“Today should be a celebration no matter what happens and as club captain I will certainly be celebrating Divock and wishing him all the best for the future. The big fella deserves nothing less.”
Origi, who joined Liverpool for £10 million in 2014, might not get a swansong, though.
Klopp’s side have to win on Sunday to maximise their chances of winning the Premier League, hoping Aston Villa can get at least one point off Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
And therefore it’s possible that the German manager won’t have the luxury of introducing Origi, just to say goodbye.
In an ideal world, Liverpool will be winning 4-0 with 20 minutes to go and Klopp can bring him on but, if it’s a cagey encounter, the former Borussia Dortmund boss won’t risk the result to let Origi bid farewell.
