Kumail Nanjiani says Pakistan are “missing players who could walk into any team” ahead of the T20 World Cup.

Kumail Nanjiani has delivered a sobering take on Pakistan’s prospects ahead of the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, saying the team is short on both quality and balance.

The Pakistani-American actor, who is a big cricket fan, laid out exactly why the 2009 ICC T20 champions struggle on the world’s stage.

Kumail Nanjiani highlights Pakistan’s weaknesses and India’s rise

Kumail Nanjiani spoke openly about how hard it’s been to watch Pakistan fall behind, especially in their rivalry with India.

Speaking on The Grade Cricketer Podcast, the Hollywood star and lifelong cricket fan didn’t hold back in his assessment. He also praised India’s structure and player development.

“It’s hard for me, because our big rivalry, India-Pakistan, Pakistan has been on the receiving end of the bashing. It’s been very, very difficult to watch because India is undeniably one of the best teams in the world.”

“I think their IPL system is very, very strong. They have a lot of great all-rounders. I know the T20 World Cup is coming up. For me, what’s bothering me is that I still don’t have a good sense of what our squad is going to look like.”

Despite Pakistan’s inconsistent form, Nanjiani said their unpredictability always gives fans some hope. He jokingly also identified weaknesses across all departments

“The wild thing about our team and T20 in general, it could happen! That’s what’s horrible! You still have that little bit of hope. The last couple of World Cups, we’ve gotten sort of lucky and gotten some wild wins.”

“I think what our team really needs help with right now is our bowling, our batting, and our fielding could use some work. And we need a wicket keeper.”

Kumail Nanjiani calls out Pakistan’s lack of world-class players

Kumail Nanjiani argued that Pakistan lack players who can consistently perform at a global standard. He said that while Pakistan remain capable of surprising stronger teams, their struggles stem from inconsistency and a lack of defined roles.

“There are these guys that are just good cricketers… We (Pakistan) are sort of missing the guys who are like, ‘Oh, they can walk on to any team right now.’ I don’t know if we, sadly, have any players that could walk on to any team in the world. I think that’s a fair thing to say.”

His remarks echo the concerns of fans who believe Pakistan’s selection and strategy have lacked clarity since the 2024 T20 cycle.

Nanjiani, who has spoken often about his love for cricket, said his criticism comes from a place of deep fandom and hope. And he will want that hope to be rewarded come time for the ICC T20 World Cup.
