Paul Merson thinks Liverpool transfer target Sofyan Amrabat has been ‘absolutely phenomenal’ at the Qatar World Cup, after Morocco shocked the world and progressed to the semi-finals.
The former Arsenal double-winner added that he thinks the hard-hitting midfielder will be on the move during the January transfer window because he can’t see him staying at Serie A side, Fiorentina, for much longer given what he is producing on football’s biggest stage, as he told Sky Sports News.
The World Cup always throws up a team that wows the crowd – out of nothing – and the players who perform like they are £100 million stars, when in truth, they are playing for a low-key team going under the radar.
That guy is 26-year-old Amrabat, who has possibly been THE best midfielder at the World Cup, if there is anyone to possibly match or better him, then he is the one-time Ballon d’Or winner, Luka Modric of Croatia.
Either way, Amrabat’s performances have caught the attention of Premier League teams, including Liverpool who are in need of midfield players of his ilk.
Whatever happens with Morocco against France, these players have written their names into the history books and Amrabat has played his part.
“Amrabat in midfield was absolutely phenomenal,” said Merson. “He just reads the game. He plays for Fiorentina. I don’t know how long he will be playing for them, the way he is playing. He has been absolutely outstanding.”
AMRABAT IS WHAT LIVERPOOL NEED
From the possible high-profile signing of Jude Bellingham to securing the talents of the now in-demand Amrabat, both players are needed by Jurgen Klopp and they would fit with what he wants.
Given the noise around Bellingham, and the ridiculous transfer fee that will be demanded for the teenage Borussia Dortmund star, then a possible deal which will be much easier to conclude will be the one for Amrabat.
But if Morocco produces the greatest shock of them all and beat France by progressing to the World Cup final, then Amrabat might just become that £100 million player overnight.
