Goal journalist Charles Watts has said on his YouTube channel that there is no danger of Per Mertesacker losing his role as the Arsenal Academy manager despite Edu’s promotion to Sporting Director at the Gunners.
Edu had been working as the Arsenal Technical Director, but the North London club announced this week that the Brazilian has now been promoted to the role of Sporting Director.
The former Arsenal star will now assume ‘over-arching responsibility’ for all of Arsenal’s Academy activities, in addition to his existing responsibilities across men’s and women’s football.
Now, this might suggest to some Arsenal fans that Mertesacker’s role at the Arsenal Academy is in danger.
However, Watts has said that there is no suggestion from within the club that the former Arsenal central defender will leave.
Per Mertesacker to work with Edu at Arsenal
Watts said: “Mertesacker and Edu have a very good relationship. This isn’t a case of Mertesacker being eased out in any way.”
The journalist added: “Like I said, for any of you thinking this is the end of Mertesacker at Arsenal, as far as I am aware, from people that I have spoken to, this is absolutely not the case.”

Arsenal are a club on the up and could be hugely successful this season.
Mikel Arteta’s side are as many as five points clear of second-placed and defending champions Manchester City at the top of the Premier League at the moment.
Arsenal have also progressed to the knockout rounds of the UEFA Europa League this campaign.
