Paul Merson has said on Sky Sports News (2:02pm, February 12, 2022) that Aaron Ramsdale should not be the Arsenal captain, even though Hugo Lloris is the Tottenham Hotspur skipper.

The Sky Sports pundit believes that Ramsdale should not be given the captain’s armband at Arsenal because he is a goalkeeper.

The former Arsenal star does not want French striker Alexandre Lacazette to be the captain of the Gunners either.

However, former Crystal Palace forward Clinton Morrison has pointed out that Lloris is the Tottenham captain, and he is a goalkeeper.

Merson said about Ramsdale becoming the Arsenal captain: “Nah, I don’t think so.”

Morrison responded: “I don’t care. Lloris does it at Tottenham.”

Could Aaron Ramsdale be Arsenal captain?

In our view, it is too early for Ramsdale to become the Arsenal captain.

After all, the 23-year-old goalkeeper joined Arsenal from Sheffield United for £24 million (The Athletic) only in the summer of 2021.

Now, we know that Lacazette will stay as the Arsenal captain until the end of the season.

If the striker leaves when his current contract runs out in the summer of 2022, then Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will need to find a new captain.

We do not think that it will be – or should be – Ramsdale.

No, this has nothing to do with the fact that the 24-year-old is a goalkeeper, but there are more seniors and experienced players than Ramsdale in the current Arsenal squad.
