The January transfer window is tough to navigate at the best of times, but now, we have a genuine mystery on our hands.
Indeed, according to The Telegraph, an unnamed Premier League club has had a £30m bid rejected for Douglas Luiz, and while we can’t say for sure who it is, it would make a lot of sense if it was Newcastle.
This team reportedly isn’t Arsenal, and there aren’t many other sides in the Premier League that are prepared to throw that sort of money at a midfielder.
Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea could probably afford to pay that much, but they already have plenty of depth in their midfields, while City could have bought Luiz back for much cheaper just a few months ago via their buy-back clause.
Manchester United could also afford Luiz, but with no permanent manager in place and an already bloated squad, it’s hard to see the Red Devils spending such an amount on this player.
Tottenham could be this so-called mystery side, but with Sofyane Amrabat reportedly close to joining the north London club, it’s hard to imagine Spurs throwing that sort of money at Luiz, especially before they sorted out the departures of Tanguy Ndombele and Dele Alli.

Meanwhile, we know that Newcastle want a midfielder. They’ve been strongly linked to Bruno Guimaraes, but after Lyon denied reports of a fee being agreed, it would make sense if the Magpies began to look elsewhere.
Newcastle certainly aren’t scared to splash the cash. They’ve made eye-watering bids for a number of players in this window already, and it’s fair to say they’re fans of Brazilian players, with Diego Carlos and Guimaraes seemingly being two of their top targets this month.
Luiz is certainly the type of player Newcastle want as well. He’s been labelled as ‘unbelievable’ in the past, and he’d bring exactly the type of stability that Eddie Howe is looking for in his midfield.
We can’t say for sure that Newcastle are the team in for Luiz. After all, The Telegraph have been unable to divulge the identity of this mystery bidder, but with all things considered, it would make sense if the Tyneside club were the team in for the 23-year-old.
